Professional Events

Alpha Rho Chi is a great way to network with professionals. We have been fortunate to collaborate with Art San Diego to design and fabricate an installation for the Art San Diego's 2013 gallery. We also have had the privilege to get our portfolios reviewed by working professionals in the field.

Portfolio Reviews

As a professional fraternity one of our goals is to network with professionals. We have made portfolio workshops where we have had working professionals review our portfolios. It was a great insight on what employers look for during portfolio reviews as well as interview tips.

Art San Diego Modular Lounge Chairs

Our Numisius Colony was contacted by ECOR USA and the Art San Diego Contemporary Art Fair to design and

fabricate a pavilion for the center lounge. The provided design criteria for this center lounge was an adaptable seating element for between 20-50 people, that can be

transformed and arranged depending on the different uses of the center lounge--a cafe, a lecture and a silent disco night. Within ourselves, we broke into teams and held multiple

charrettes and an in-house design competition. Taking into consideration the theme of the art fair--[collide] or creative intersections--and the various programmatic needs of the space, our designs centered on versatility, modularity, dynamism and complexity through materials and placement. The concept of a field of objects to define a space--like stars and solar systems composing a galaxy, or electrons orbiting a nucleus to define an atom--rather than borders or walls to define the space was the creative jumping off point. After numerous meetings with ECOR USA, it was proposed that we work in parallel, both designing seating elements to the ASD Fair. A winning design was chosen from the Professional Committee and presented to Ms. Berchtold, the director of the ASD Fair.

The project from fabrication to final assembly took 1 week 3 days. We transported the whole lounge in one

truck and assembled on site in under 6 hours. The event was a success, we successfully represented our school to the local art community and showed all of San Diego what

happens when you give the students at Newschool the opportunity

to design. The project was featured in San Diego Home and Garden Magazine, Archinect Academia as well as the local news(KUSI).

Youtopia

Over the summer, some of our brothers were involved in the Youtopia project. Youtopia is the San Diego Burning Man Community’s official Burning Man regional event where we celebrate the vibrant creative and communal elements of San Diego and the surrounding areas. Our brothers collobarated with designers and engineers in order to construct a lit up structure for the 2014 Youtopia event.
